I am currently working towards my Bachelor’s Degree and will then move on to a law clerk program that will bypass law school and allow me to sit for the bar exam.
I can tell you personally right now, I am a legal assistant and work mainly with family law documents, clients and situations. I love it. Every case is different, it never gets boring.
Yes, you do end up with some pain in the butt clients, however, when it comes to divorce especially-it’s so easy! Even with the parties fighting like crazy, it’s still interesting every time you accept a new client. However, if you’re looking to strike it rich-personal injury is what you want.
It’s sometimes seen as a soft option, as the arguments tend to be based on practical situations rather than legal interpretation. Relatively few precedents tend to be cited because each case will have its own unique features. A lot of people take it up because they like the idea of helping people, but in fact they often witness a great deal of hurt and pain, as family law is not an exact science and quite frequently the outcome is that nobody actually wins and everybody seems to emerge the poorer. It reflects life — and life is not fair.
Maybe some [people choose to practise family law because they are particularly empathetic…or maybe they are frustrated social workers at heart – who knows? I practised family law for several years and hated it – you need a heart of stone not to become involved emotionally…it is frustrating, stressful, badly paid and NEVER has a happy ending! Take an occasional case if you want the experience, but don’t confine yourself ot one area of practice.
